Parker Buchan
Past Notes
June 13th, 2022
Missed you tonight again, Parker. Are we done for the year?
June 6th, 2022
I missed seeing Parker tonight.
See you next week.
May 30th, 2022
We worked on Eye of the Tiger and Boulevard of Broken Dreams, then added a new one, Sweet Child of Mine: (we didn't get through it though, just listened).

This might be a bit harder, but I think it's a good next step
May 16th, 2022
Parker worked mostly on Eye of the Tiger this week, and forgot to practice Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Here's the link again:

For Eye of the Tiger, keep working on the fills especially... don't forget open high hats, crashes, and snare parts.
May 9th, 2022
Great job today, Parker! Work on Eye of the Tiger more, and practice this new one too, Boulevard of Broken Dreams:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Rnh_yKE3I&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
See you next week!
May 2nd, 2022
Parker is getting better on Yellow, but it's not quite there yet... another week working on that hard bridge and the fills is needed
We also added Eye of the Tiger:

April 25th, 2022
Parker went through Billie Jean as a warm up, which he's got down pretty good.
He said he hadn't practiced over the last two weeks, so we reviewed and worked through the hard parts of Coldplay's Yellow again. The bridge has a strange part which took a bit of extra work. I'd like him to learn all the fills too.
See you next week!

Here's the 20 drum fills video:

Go through it and just work on drum fill one and two.

Good job on Billie Jean - keep working on that.
Here's the 20 drum fills video:

Go through it and just work on drum fill one and two.

Parker did well on Seven Nation Army, despite not practicing (according to him). We wrapped it up, and now I'm asking him to put the same work into Billie Jean.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3lehTwTOwc
There are lots of hard parts in this, so harder to fake. :)
March 21st, 2022
AMAZING job on Back in Black!! You nailed it.
Now work on Seven Nation Army, and Billie Jean and get them to the same level!
See you next week!
March 14th, 2022
Parker said he hdn't practiced this week, so we used the lesson to work out some of the things he was having trouble with in both songs.
He shook on it to practice this week, so hopefully it'll be perfect by next time! :)
We didn't have time to go over Billie Jean.
March 7th, 2022
We started out with Back in Black... there were still some issues with getting off the beat and not playing the drum fills quite right... I would give it about a 75% to 80% as far as a mark would go at this point.
We then went over the new song last week, Billie Jean. He said he had forgotten to work on it, so here's the link again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3lehTwTOwc
We went over it for most of the rest of the lesson, and he got pretty good at it. The floor tom part is still needing work, and so is the open hat and double snare part.
We then ended with Seven Nation Army. He really has this one almost perfect. I marked it at about a 90% at this point.
Let's see if we can pull these up to perfect by next week! :)
February 28th, 2022
Parker did really well on Billie Jean!
Here's the video with the drum part:

Try to get the hihat parts if you can, and the tom toms where they appear.
February 7th, 2022
We went through Back in Black and Circles - Parker hadn't practised as much as I would like, and we had a bit of a difficult lesson.
I asked him to find a song he really loves that he'd like to learn, and send me the name of it this week... I'll try to find a drum video that isn't too hard that he can watch to figure out how to play it.
January 31st, 2022
Parker did an amazing job on Seven Nation Army - a few little things still need to be polished up, but it's come a long way!
We reviewed Circles, but it needs the same attention he gave the other one this week.
We also added a new one, Back In Black:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kiq9HDUkNxg&ab_channel=TaipeiDawg
January 24th, 2022
We started out with the eighth note beat, and Parker has really come a long way with it! Great job!
We tried it in Circles, but it was hard for Parker to keep up -- he tended to drag behind with the eighths, so work on that some more. Here's the video again:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P69ooyukIKs
Then we added Seven Nation Army:

See you next time!
January 17th, 2022
Parker isn't coming tonight.
January 10th, 2022
We worked through the eighth note beat for quite a while, trying to help Parker "get it," as he's still having trouble playing.
We went through some of Circles together, and worked for a while on one of the drum fills as well.
January 3rd, 2022
We worked through the quarter note and eighth note beats again, and I tried to help Parker figure out the latter - I recommend he practice 8th notes at home.
We continued with Circles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P69ooyukIKs&ab_channel=DRUMMATE
December 27th, 2021
We reviewed the quarter-note beats (one hat on each of the counts "1,2,3,4") and went over them with a crash on 1 and tom toms on 3 and 4.
We then tried eighth note beats (in which the hat plays 8 times on each bar).
We then looked at a song to learn, and I showed him the basics of reading the music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P69ooyukIKs
December 20th, 2021
We continued with the drums today, and worked on putting a crash on beat one and a tom on beat 4.
We also tried a crash on beat four every TWO bars, (counting to eight instead of four)
We added "flams" to the stick styles - where you hit the drums at slightly different times.
December 13th, 2021
Parker switched to drums tonight. I think he found it easier, and picked up the basic quarter note beat fairly quickly.
We learned the names of the parts of the kit: kick, snare, hi hat, tom toms (high, mid, low/floor tom) crash and ride cymbal.
We also did a crash on beat ONE every 8 beats.
December 6th, 2021
Parker did really well tonight. We reviewed the chords he'd been working on and also went over the others, focusing on trying to get to the place where we can play God's Country.
We were able to go through it with the recording. He struggles a bit getting to the A minor, especially after the D minor, so we focused on that too.
November 29th, 2021
We reviewed the chords Parker has been learning, and focused especially on D, A, and E minor, because he wasn't remembering the chord names.
If you get really good at that, then push yourself into the other chords we've learned.
November 22nd, 2021
Parker and I went through all the chords so far, and then played through Circles a bit, before adding a new song, God's Country by Blake Shelton:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HMqRXBuFfs
The capo is on 3, but we don't need to worry about that too much for now, until he can play along with it.
The chords at least in the beginning are :
Am / / / | C / / / | G / / / | Dm / / / |
November 15th, 2021
Parker did well today. We went through Circles together, and worked on a bunch of chords as well, adding D, and A.
We timed him playing chords - trying to beat his previous time. We'll keep doing that to see if he can get his chord change time down to 3 seconds (or better!)
Try to practice all your chords and your songs every day for at least 10 minutes.
November 8th, 2021
Parker had a busy week and wasn't able to practice as much as he wanted. We went over the names of the parts of the guitar, and the chords together, and then added three more:
C, C major 7 (C^) and F major 7 (F^).
These are the chords in Post Malone's Circles
https://youtu.be/WnLIGgTaBM0
We also added A minor at the end of the lesson to add something else to work on.
November 1st, 2021
Today we started out learning the guitar. The first thing we did was name all the different parts:
neck, body, sound board, nut, strings, frets, fret board, fret bars, pick guard, head, tuning pegs/tuners/machine heads, sound hole, strings, etc.
Draw a picture of a guitar at home, and label it for me. (In your booklet).
Then we learned two chords: G and E minor (Em).
I drew those out on a piece of card stock. Please write those in your booklet as well.
Practice every day, even if it's only five minutes. Practising a little bit every day is better than practising a lot only once or twice.
