Barry Heyman
Past Notes
April 29th, 2025
Barry has been working on the bar chords we did last week. We spent the lesson just playing through them in order. I showed him where E minor is on the neck as an A minor, and we cycled between G, C, and E minor using bar chords.
April 22nd, 2025
Barry thought he should focus on bar chords a bit more, so he started out with playing through many of the E shape, E minor shape, A, and A minor shape chords. I recommended that he focus instead on drilling to the chords from other chord shapes.
We printed out Evidence and used that one as an example song, making the G and A minors a bar chord.
April 15th, 2025
We went through the song We Will Never Be Again, and talked a bit about strumming and chord changes. Barry was struggling with how to strum it, and so we just talked it through and worked out where he changes them etc.
April 8th, 2025
In Barry's lesson we added a new song, I Will Never Be the Same Again, by Darlene Z, Hillsongs Australia
It had a bunch of new chords in it, so we worked on learning them.
April 1st, 2025
We kept working on Jesus I Love You today, figuring out some chords like D/G and C major 7.
March 25th, 2025
Barry is in too much pain today, and is cancelling.
March 18th, 2025
Barry had been thinking about "Jesus, I Love You" this week, so we went through that a few times. It's another 6/8 time signature, so we worked specifically on the places where that was throwing him off a bit.
March 11th, 2025
We continued working through Our King Forever. Sounded good today! Don't be so hard on yourself. :)
March 4th, 2025
We worked through Our King Forever for the whole lesson. By the end Barry really had it down well. Especially when we think it as 6 beats he's able to play it without mistakes.
February 25th, 2025
Barry is still painting, and won't be coming in today.
February 18th, 2025
Barry is unable to come in today.
February 11th, 2025
Barry and Ginger are still sick this week.
February 4th, 2025
Barry isn't coming today.
January 28th, 2025
Today Barry brought his brother Gary with him. We continued working through Our King Forever, which we started last week.
January 21st, 2025
We worked on the bridge to ending transition, doing it a few times to help Barry get used to it.
We then added a new song, which is in 68 and the chords change quickly.
January 14th, 2025
We reviewed Always and then talked about 2 chords, how to find the C2, E2, G2, A2, etc. We then reviewed octaves with the "double chess move" trick.
January 7th, 2025
Barry wanted to go back a bit and review some strumming with especially 12/8 and 6/8 to get to some chords in time. I suggested he take a few strums away from the chord right before the hard chord to give him time to change. It's important tho, that you don't lose count when you do that so you know when to start strumming the next chord.
Great job! Glad you're back!
December 17th, 2024
December 10th, 2024
December 3rd, 2024
Barry is unwell today.
November 26th, 2024
Barry is sick today.
November 19th, 2024
Barry took a break from Bless God, and instead we went through Christ Alone, especially focusing on the intro.
November 12th, 2024
In Barry's lesson we went through Bless God together, the whole song, and worked especially on strumming for the bridge and last chorus.
I gave a few suggestions for places where he was struggling like between the Bm7 and the Asus. Also, trying to look ahead so you know what chord is coming next can help things play more smoothly.
November 5th, 2024
In Barry's lesson, we used my classical guitar for part of the lesson, so he can see what a wider neck is like.
We worked through the whole song's finger picking (Bless God).
October 29th, 2024
Barry wasn't feeling great today, so we talked through a bit about the girls who are visiting with him, and some theory of the circle of fifths, keys, clefs, etc.
October 22nd, 2024
Today we talked about major and minor chords as you work up the scales from do re me, etc.
Each note in the scale has a minor or major chord associated with it, and they're in the order of major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished.
Here's an old video I made trying to describe it:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jD1ODqjMllo
The E string as the root of the scale allows you to play e shape chords, and the a string allows you to play a shape chords... either major or minor, as the case may require.
October 15th, 2024
October 8th, 2024
Barry wasn't feeling very well today, so we had a chat instead of playing guitar.
October 1st, 2024
We continued with Bless God, working out the finger picking. There are places where the chords change before 4 beats have gone by, so we talked and practised through those.
September 24th, 2024
Today we added Bless God, the new song from church on Sunday. We learned a new finger picking pattern: t f m f r f m f
The chords change on quarter notes a couple of times, which require plucking the strings with thumb, first, second, and third fingers.
September 17th, 2024
Barry is away this week.
September 10th, 2024
We did finger picking review again this week. I encouraged Barry to really nail the first note of the bar with his thumb, even if the rest of the notes aren't quite ready yet.
September 3rd, 2024
We continued working on the finger picking this week. To give him another pattern to learn, we started Matt Redman's "Blessed Be Your Name," which has a pattern in which the thumb moves strings. This is often done with country music, but in this pattern, we avoid the 1-5 sound of country.
August 27th, 2024
We continued with finger picking today, trying to work out the E minor section, and the Dsus strum. We also started on the bridge.
August 20th, 2024
August 13th, 2024
We continued working on the finger picking, and tried playing through the verses together, focusing on when to come in, and also the E minor, for which Barry was forgetting to play the low E string.
August 6th, 2024
We looked over arpeggios again - I had written out the arpeggio incorrectly for The Blessing, so fixed that. We also talked about fingerings for C#m7, and practising techniques, like stopping when you get something right.
July 30th, 2024
Barry cancelled today.
July 23rd, 2024
Barry was frustrated with himself that he didn't practise as much this week, but he's coming along really well with his fingerpicking. We reviewed the new patterns again, and talked about playing without looking at his hands.
He's going to come with his guitar in a couple of weeks to just sit in for rehearsal.
July 16th, 2024
We continued working on finger picking. This week Barry learned how to play the second 6/8 pattern. We went through both songs, and then I showed him another pattern that he could use.
July 9th, 2024
We continued with finger picking, working on how to sing over it. The main issue is to know what beat the words come on in, so you can synchronize.
We also looked at a Chris Tomlin song really briefly.
July 2nd, 2024
We continued with finger picking today, and I printed out Breathe.
Some points to note:
1. The chords change sometimes after only two beats, so count "1 and 2 and" for the picking, and then change chords.
2. There are slash chords, so sometimes your thumb plays a different bass note than the chord root.
June 27th, 2024
Today we started finger picking in Barry's lesson.
There are a few rules:
1. Your pinky doesn't take part in the picking. It's a rest to keep your hand steady.
2. Your thumb's job is to play the root/bass of each chord. It's usually on the E, A, or D string.
3. Keep the same pattern on the same strings for each chord. To start, let's use the first finger, second finger, third finger
June 20th, 2024
We worked through the strumming pattern again today for Goodness of God. After doing that for a while, we spoke about what some other things might be to learn next. I suggested possibly finger picking.
June 13th, 2024
June 6th, 2024
Today we wrote out the strumming pattern at the beginning of Goodness of God. We worked through it a bit and talked about things relating to notation like the direction of stems on the staff lines, and etc.
May 30th, 2024
In Barry's lesson we went over the rhythm for lesson seven and eight, and worked the most on the dotted eighth with sixteenths, which can be quite confusing, especially when they're tied.
Barry's going to work on lessons 4 through 8, and maybe 9 this week.
May 23rd, 2024
Barry is feeling unwell, and has been all week so won't be able to make it in.
May 16th, 2024
Barry's not coming in today, as he's been unwell this week.
May 9th, 2024
We spent the lesson working on level 4 and 5 and just started 6 and 7 a bit.
May 2nd, 2024
Barry brought his guitar in today, and we played through the note reading exercises using the chords and rhythms. He was having trouble with the eighth followed by two sixteenths, so we worked on that especially.
April 25th, 2024
We played through all 10 of the reading exercises, and then looked at some drum parts. Here's the Bee Gees, Stayin' Alive song I showed you in case you want to try it at home:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8Fza2ZuRLE
April 18th, 2024
Barry wrote out the rhythm reading exercises for 4, 5, and 6. We went through them together, and then added 7 to the list to work on this week.
April 11th, 2024
We worked on the second timing video today.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp4flocUmxM
We got up to the triplet page, I think that was 6.
April 4th, 2024
Barry continued working on the first beginners rhythms reading video.
https://youtu.be/_ssC7VfkQWE
We did it without playing it, just reading the notes while it was paused. We focused on the second page of the third exercise where he was getting stuck or losing time.
March 28th, 2024
We continued with drums today. We went through he first video, lessons 1 and 2 and talked about time reading for 1/4 notes and 1/8th notes. I showed Barry how to count and in between the numbers to keep track of the eights.
There is a second video that we walked through at the end of the lesson. I encouraged him to walk through lessons 1 and 2.
March 21st, 2024
We did a drum kit sight reading test for beginners today. Here's the link:
https://youtu.be/_ssC7VfkQWE
This is also a good video for reading note timings.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp4flocUmxM
See you next week!
March 14th, 2024
March 7th, 2024
We did some more drum work today. Barry and I played along with This Is Amazing Grace, and then I showed him (and videoed) a drum fill on the tom for beat 4).
I also recorded playing the ride instead of the high hat, should he want to work on that this week.
February 29th, 2024
Barry is feeling unwell today.
February 15th, 2024
We did drums again today. Barry had felt frustrated with the 8th note beat so we worked on the quarter. I suggested he add the crash on beat one again, and maybe a tom on beat 8
I also suggested trying to move the high hat to the ride.
February 8th, 2024
We continued with drums today, and added the crash on beat one. I had him do it every second bar as well, and we practised going back and forth.
Then we reviewed the eighth note beat, and I recorded a video for them to look back on.
February 1st, 2024
We started drums today, and worked on the quarter note beat, first without high hat, and then with it.
We tried a various number of speeds, and worked on some bad habits. Good job!
January 25th, 2024
Today we talked about different ways Barry might approach playing with more flow and musicality. The main thing that affects it in my opinion, is stopping in various places. I suggested he might consider trying out the drums a bit to see if that helps him learn more about rhythm.
We'll try that next week.
January 18th, 2024
Barry won't be coming in today.
January 9th, 2024
Barry is cancelling today because of the weather.
January 2nd, 2024
Barry is coming along on Always! We focused on the last part of the verse especially today.
He's also got one more week in this slot, and then is moving to a new time slot on Thursdays.
December 19th, 2023
We continued working through the song Always, figuring out where the strums go with the melody. I suggested that it might help to think of the melodies in groups of three, and I bracketed them like this to show how the fit with the strums on the paper.
Next week I'm off for Boxing Day, so see you in two weeks!
Merry Christmas!
December 12th, 2023
We kept working on the song Always. We added the concept of playing the strums on the beat at the same time as playing the melody.
December 5th, 2023
We wrote out the verses and bridge of Always by Chris Tomlin. We spent most of the time working on the second verse, and just touched on the bridge.
November 28th, 2023
We talked about the bridge some more, and I tried to draw out the notes for how the triplets fit in time. I drew both quarter note and eighth note triplets.
He played it again, and we talked about the ending, going into the chorus and ending the song.
We then added a new one from the music we use on Wednesday nights - a Chris Tomlin one called Always, which we did in D.
I rewrote out the tab for the D scale to help him play it - we started with the chorus. The melody here just uses the two highest strings (b and e)
November 21st, 2023
We continued with Waymaker, focusing on the D chord that comes after "Promise keeper, light in the darkness"
Sounds great!
November 16th, 2023
Barry continued working on Waymaker. This week he had Ginger put count numbers for how many rests he should wait for before coming in with the next line. It helped a lot.
We also drilled through the areas he was having trouble, focusing just on those parts, two bars at a time.
November 14th, 2023
November 7th, 2023
Barry continued working on Waymaker, putting the chords with the melody. He felt like he was struggling more than he had been at home. We just kept going over it, trying to get him more comfortable with the transitions.
October 24th, 2023
We worked more on the melody of Waymaker, especially the first two chords, going to C. By the end of the lesson he had the transition nearly at the right speed.
October 10th, 2023
Added chords to the melody of Waymaker, using the open G scale. Amazing job! I recorded a video on Ginger's phone in case Barry forgot how to do it.
See you next week!
October 3rd, 2023
Barry is unable to make it today.
September 19th, 2023
Barry did really well on his first song, How Great Is Our God - the bridge had some problems, which we played over and over to help iron them out.
I suggested he work on that bridge especially this week, to just imprint that on his brain.
We then looked at another song which I didn't really know - I don't recall it's title now, but it had "I Exalt Thee" in the ending.
Finally, we finished with Waymaker, and that was quite good. Barry played it on the open strings, and I suggested we maybe try to add chords with it.
See you next week!
September 12th, 2023
Barry switched songs this week, and we played How Great Is Our God, focusing on the timing. If I sing along, it seems it's easier for him to count and know when the next part comes in. I suggested he sing along with himself at home too.
September 5th, 2023
Barry isn't able to come today.
August 29th, 2023
August 22nd, 2023
Barry has been really doing well on Rescue Story. Today we nailed down where the beats go to help with playing it in the correct time. We went over the chorus multiple times together to work out the kinks.
Good job!
August 8th, 2023
Barry has memorized Rescue Story. We spent a bit of time trying to find the right place on the neck to play it so it matched the key of the chords on the chart.
We added the other parts of the song, and talked for a little while about the difference between the blues scale and the pentatonic (essentially, one note is added between two and three (the flat third).
August 1st, 2023
We added a new Zach Williams song today, called Rescue Story
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yr48Berkqc
We also went through The Blessing a couple of times.
July 25th, 2023
Barry figured out the position of the next scale (which I'd left out somehow!)
Rather than go through the song he's been working on, since he was having difficulty with the timing, we added the Benediction Song today.
July 18th, 2023
I just realized I applied the song notes to the wrong week, and that I'd already written something. Here are both together:
We kept working on Gracefully Broken, focusing on playing the melody with all the rests in the right spot. It sounds great! Maybe Ginger can do the same with him at home.
Barry was struggling a bit with Gracefully broken, because he doesn't know the lyrics or form of the song as well as others.
We went through it a bit, with me counting out where he should rest. That seemed to help a lot, and I think he got it by the end.
I also encouraged him to not stop and start over if he plays a wrong string, but to just keep going as if he didn't misplay. This is a great habit to get into so that songs sound as musical as possible.
July 11th, 2023
Barry is doing well on Remember. We went over it a bit, and I clarified the neck position scales, as he was missing that it started at open, at the bottom of the neck.
We then added a new one, Tasha Cobbs Gracefully Broken:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FP9FYyYso8o
July 4th, 2023
Barry Bryan & Katie Torwalt - Remember
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TM-daXqYAA
June 27th, 2023
Barry and Ginger won't be coming today because they're going on holidays.
June 20th, 2023
Barry and I worked through Worthy Of It All melody, then tried to correct a problem he was having with the open A scale.
We're going to learn position / shape 1 on the fret board next. When he got home, he thought he may have already learned shape 1, so Ginger texted me that 2 will be the one he focuses on.
June 13th, 2023
Barry is getting the scales memorized, and has really done an amazing job at this. I wrote out Worthy Of it All for him today, and it's in E.
This took a bit of working out / reminding of how the keys and shapes work. Scales aren't named by letters on the fret board, but by shape number.
May 30th, 2023
Barry and I worked through a couple of melodies on the new scale position, and I wrote out How Great Is Our God for him.
I encouraged him to learn the melodies for the songs in G in the open G scale at the bottom of the neck.
May 23rd, 2023
Barry and I worked through the same song again today, focusing on the bridge this time. He asked me to send him another song to learn, which I hope to get to before the end of the week.
May 16th, 2023
Barry came down by himself today, and used my guitar.
He created another slider for the scale position we've been working on, and so we looked at that together. He could extend the slot one more space to the left to make the open scales work better for the key of G.
I then showed him the next scale he could learn, one position down from the first scale we learned.
May 9th, 2023
Barry said he hadn't practised as much as he wanted to, but did last night and today.
I showed him a new position for the scale, going the other way from the "home row," and this is the scale to play at the bottom of the fret at the nut, to play in G.
May 2nd, 2023
Barry is unable to come today.
April 25th, 2023
Barry and I continued with working on melodies by number. I'm amazed at the memorization he's doing! We added another worship song, Way Maker.
April 18th, 2023
Barry has committed the numbers of the major scale to memory for the first scale position! Great job, Barry.
We added the following songs:
My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean
Jesus Loves Me
This Is Amazing Grace
See you next week!
April 11th, 2023
The order of sharps and flats:
Flats:
B E A D G C F
Sharps:
F C G D A E B
Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle
We also started learning the scale by numbers.
April 4th, 2023
Barry and I talked about soloing and how that works. I wrote out some A/B/A/B patterns to help him develop the idea of melody.
March 28th, 2023
Pentatonic Scales:
https://i0.wp.com/msworldsite.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/C-major-pentatonic-scale.png
Today we talked about pentatonic and major scales, and how to get from the former to the latter by adding half steps in a couple of important places (before the one, and before the fourth).
I showed him an exercise he can work on as well.
March 21st, 2023
Barry has learned the first position pentatonic scale very well. We played through them in G, then E, then D. I played chords along with him first on the guitar, then on the piano.
He had some questions regarding how and when to play various notes, and I think I helped to clear that up for him.
The key is to make repeatable patterns which other people's ears will recognize. Those patterns will make it sound pretty, like music.
March 7th, 2023
Barry did well on the chorus of This Is Amazing Grace, but was confused a bit by one part where the D was. He had been practising it correctly, however.
We then added the verse, which is pretty similar in it's style.
Reminder that I won't be around for next week.
February 28th, 2023
We continued through the rest of This Is Amazing Grace chords/melody combination. I wrote out tab and made a bit of a video on Ginger's phone to show one part.
Barry is doing really well with this, I'm pumped about how much he's learning and acquiring.
February 21st, 2023
Barry played through At the Cross for me, and we decided to add a new song... we did "This is Amazing Grace." -- starting with just the chorus.
February 14th, 2023
We went through At The Cross together, focusing again on holding the chords while playing the melody. I think Barry was frustrated with himself, but he was doing well, we're just pushing through to harder and more challenging stuff to learn.
February 7th, 2023
We spent half the lesson chatting (sorry!) and then worked on the melodies of the G scale that I had written out for Barry last time.
January 31st, 2023
Barry has been working on Mary Had a Little Lamb and the open G scale. I added chords to the melody and we worked through playing that together.
I added the chorus of At The Cross with melody and chords as well, so he has something additional to work on.
January 24th, 2023
Today Braydon brought Barry on the 4 wheeler. We reviewed the strumming patterns, and then I gave Barry a quick course on reading tab.
I wrote out the G scale for him, as well as the first line of Mary Had a Little Lamb.
January 17th, 2023
January 10th, 2023
We continued working on strumming this week. I suggested he try combining two one bar strumming patterns together into a 2 bar strumming pattern.
We worked through three different examples of that. I suggested he try to play some of the songs he knows already using these strum patterns.
January 3rd, 2023
We went over the strumming that we've been doing over the past few weeks, and then added some other patterns, specifically, NOT strumming on some beats.
We started by skipping 2, and then beat 3, and then the AND of beat 3.
1 AND REST AND 3 AND 4 AND
1 AND 2 AND REST AND 4 AND
then
1 AND 2 AND 3 REST 4 AND
December 27th, 2022
We worked on strumming again this week, changing which "and" beat we up strum on and working through the same song with different strums.
December 20th, 2022
Ginger has to work late tonight
December 13th, 2022
We went over Worthy of It All together, and then talked about strumming, specifically some things he can do to practice different strumming techniques.
I suggested down beats first, 1, 2, 3, 4, where you only strum down, and then adding up beats between those counts on the ANDs.
Start with something like 1 2 3 AND 4, and play a whole song like that, and then maybe 1 AND 2 3 4, etc.
When you get comfortable with those, put two ANDS in:
1 AND 2 3 4 AND
etc.
December 6th, 2022
Barry wanted me to write out a new song for him, Worthy of It All (in A)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywoMeuutuc4&ab_channel=musicmeetsheaven
We also went over the timing for Sails, because he was struggling at home with playing it the right speed... I think it was a timing issue more than a tempo issue (3 beats on each beat instead of two).
November 29th, 2022
Barry and Ginger had to cancel for tonight.
November 22nd, 2022
In Barry's lesson we went through Sails together, trying to get the timing right, and switching the chords. Barry is getting really close. He has the timing down, especially if he just strums and mutes the guitar. The B minor 7 slows him down a bit, so he's going to work more on that this week.
November 15th, 2022
Today we worked on Sails, especially with regard to the timing of the chord changes.
We went through the song together a couple of times, ironing out some of the details.
He's doing great, and just needs to work on the bridge a bit, where it's quite different than the verses.
Great job! You're improving every week.
November 8th, 2022
We went through some of the songs from a couple of weeks ago, This is Amazing Grace, Benediction, and Great Are You Lord.
Good job! Glad you're feeling better!
November 1st, 2022
Barry is still unwell today.
October 25th, 2022
Barry and Ginger aren't coming in today
October 18th, 2022
This week we added "This Is Amazing Grace," and Barry played it through the first time almost without mistakes! We did it a couple of more times, and other than forgetting the 1 bar of chords here and there, he played it flawlessly.
Great job Barry!
October 11th, 2022
Barry did great on his guitar playing with timing! Good job! We added another song this week from my repertoire, called Great Are You Lord.
It has a Dsus in the intro and chorus, and an Aminor/G in the bridge.
See you next week!
October 4th, 2022
Today we worked through How Great Is Our God on guitar, and focused on the beat, trying to keep track of beat one. We used my slash charts to do this, so that it was always clear where we are. I asked Barry to just count, and not to pay attention to the words or melody... just the 1,2,3, and 4 in his head.
August 16th, 2022
August 9th, 2022
Barry can't make it today.
August 2nd, 2022
July 26th, 2022
For future self: I set today's lesson cost to zero because Ginger has a 30 credit.
We went through strumming for both songs again today, and worked especially on the counting between chord changes. A good habit to get into is to always be thinking to yourself where one, two, three, and four are in the bar.
July 19th, 2022
Barry had the strumming videos from last time, and we worked through those, this time switching the chords from G to C back to G again, etc.
We did this a number of times, and then tried playing those strums with Blessed Be the Name and the other one I can't remember now/ :-)
June 27th, 2022
Barry and Ginger cancelled today.
June 13th, 2022
We worked through strumming today, and Ginger made some videos for Barry to play along with.
Focusing on the quarter notes, the DOWN beats will help in keeping strumming even. Look ahead in a song and see if the chords change on the quarternotes, and then use that to decide the strumming that works.
We talked about dotted quarter notes, which add half of the value of the note to the note. So a dotted quarter note is worth three eightnotes in value/length.
June 6th, 2022
We focused on strumming today, and I recommended he try to simplify his strumming. I wrote out the quarter notes, eighth notes, and sixteenth notes in a bar, and explained that each strum has to fit inside those lines, and not outside of them.
We played through a couple of songs with this in mind, and then I recommended strumming plain quarter notes while saying one ee and ah two ee and ah three ee and ahh four ee and ahh. This will help keep the timing stable, and not speed up or slow down.

I messed up my schedule today, and ran over 15 minutes for Rory's lesson. We can make up that time in two weeks when Rory is done - you can come 15 minutes early if you'd like to.
We went over the sevenths and sus chords that Barry has been working on - doing very well on too!
We then learned five minor seventh chords, and talked through the new song Sails... we also talked about strum patterns, and I noticed that he isn't keeping the count in his head very well. I suggested he get used to thinking of beat 1. I showed some drum beats that show the count in them. Here are two examples:

Search for different "BPM" numbers (beats per minutes) to find other speeds.

Barry showed me what he'd been working on with the E minor and A minor shapes as bar chords and was able to correctly name 95% of the chords all the way up the neck! Amazing!
We then added 7ths and sus chord shapes. I drew them out on the neck for him.
I explained quickly that 7ths lead us into other chords. For example, a G7 leads into a C. Here are a few:
B7 -> E
E7 -> A
A7 -> D
D7 -> G
G7 -> C
C7 -> F
Here's a video I made for another student to help describe triads on the neck.

Barry did a really great job in learning the bar chords, and also memorizing the whole steps and half steps between chords on the fretboard!
We went through the E shape and A shape chords- there was one problem with the A shape missing one of the strings, which we fixed up.
We then talked about doing the same thing with the E minor and A minor shapes.
We held off on the sevenths and sustains for another time.

Barry played through some songs for me, and then we started with the major and minor chords. We started on A, and worked our way up to G for open chords, and introduced Barry to how bar chords work... finding B and F that way by moving A and E up the neck.
Next week, we'll add sus and 7 chords.
