Karter may be missing lessons tonight.
January 20th, 2026
Karter was ready to move on to a new song, as he felt confident in working on Stitches and Heathens on his own.
We looked for a new song, and settled on Save Your Tears by the Weeknd. This required learning a new chord and revisiting a rarer one: D minor and F.
We went through the song a couple of times and then he wanted to have a go with finger picking. I gave him the basics of how to do a finger picking pattern.
January 13th, 2026
Two new songs this week, one he's been doing on his own, Heathens. Then we added Stitches by Shawn Mendes.
January 6th, 2026
Karter's mom Stephanie is sick tonight, so cannot bring him.
December 30th, 2025
Karter decided to keep doing lessons in January, so I booked him to continue at the same spot.
We went through Pumped Up Kicks, and then added Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi.
December 23rd, 2025
Karter is doing really well with his chord changes. We went through them all initially, and then tried working on Riptide, a song he's been learning this week.
We played along with the recording at 60% speed (or thereabouts) but he was struggling a bit with the changes. We tried again without the recording, and then I suggested we look for another song. We tried Foster The People, Pumped Up Kicks, which required learning the A chord.
He was able to get that one up to 90% speed, great job!
December 16th, 2025
Today was Karter's first lesson. We started off with labelling the parts of the instrument.
We then learned the basic strum pattern, down down down-up down
We learned the chords E minor, G, A minor, C, D and cycled between them so that he only had to move a couple of fingers each time.
